Business Leader, General Officer, and Educator

Steven J. Hashem

Business Leader

I worked my way up the corporate ladder, starting with a variety of projects at General Electric as an engineer. I didn’t start near the top, and I didn’t get there alone. As my division at General Electric merged with Martin Marietta and then again with Lockheed Martin, I progressed and developed along with it. Many terrific people, who mentored and taught me the ropes, guided my career. I was involved in many aspects of the business: software development, program management, information technology, systems engineering and integration, and finally business development. At these world-renowned companies, we developed products and services for the government as well as for domestic and international commercial clients.

I led teams of top professionals to several billion dollars in winning business opportunities as a Project Engineer, Senior Proposal Manager and Business Development Operations Manager and Director.

With Peak 74, I am now sharing my business experiences and advising future and current leaders on leadership development, strategic planning, coaching and consulting.

General Officer

My career began at West Point, where I was instilled with the Academy’s motto “Duty, Honor, Country.” I rose from a Second Lieutenant to Major General. The peak of my military career was my second tour in Iraq and assignments at the US Special Operations Command and US Central Command where I worked closely with US and allied partner senior military leadership, inter-agency personnel, international organizations and senior leadership from 60 nations in the coalitions in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was a pivotal time for the region as the first free democratic elections in Iraq’s history were held.

Trained as an infantry officer, paratrooper and Army Ranger, I was a junior leader in West Berlin, Germany during the tense Cold War. During the First Gulf War, I was a civil affairs planner—my first time to the Middle East region. I was also a Deputy Commander of a Civil Military Operations Task Force in Bosnia. I have led and trained a new crop of capable and dynamic leaders, just as those before me, did for me.

The Army provided me with numerous commands and staff assignments with immense responsibility that has materially impacted, thousands—maybe millions of lives. To say the circumstances were volatile would be an understatement. Ask the Iraqis who had purple fingers after they voted in the first free election in their lifetimes.

Educator

I taught leadership and management at the University of Pennsylvania as an Assistant Professor of Military Science. I was the President of the Joint Special Operations University. I also am a Senior Advisor and a faculty member for the Thayer Leadership Development Group at West Point where we teach executive leadership to a diverse variety of corporate, governmental and non-profit organizations and individuals.

I earned a Master in Business Administration with a concentration in Strategic Planning from The Wharton School, a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. It all began with my Bachelor of Science in General Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point. I am also a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College.

I am passionate about leadership as demonstrated by my qualifications and the uniqueness of my diverse experiences over the years.

“Rarely will one find a decorated officer such as General Hashem as approachable and engaging. Audiences benefit by hearing his message and learning from one of the best!”
